The early public conversation around Marathi identity, local employment and representation gave rise to an organised regional movement in Mumbai. This chapter introduces the social and cultural background that shaped the beginning of Shiv Sena.
From public gatherings to local branches, the organisation expanded across neighbourhoods, civic life and public issues. The movement became closely connected with questions of local identity, employment and grassroots mobilisation.
During this period, the party sharpened its political messaging while continuing to emphasise Marathi identity, regional pride and public mobilisation.
The Shiv Sena-BJP alliance formed the Maharashtra government in 1995. Manohar Joshi served as Chief Minister, and this phase became an important chapter in the party’s role in state-level governance.
This phase saw leadership transition, organisational change and the passing of Balasaheb Thackeray in 2012. It marked a major emotional and organisational turning point.
The party entered a new phase of state politics. In 2019, Uddhav Thackeray became Chief Minister after the formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government.
After the party split, the Uddhav-led faction received the name Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and the Mashaal, or flaming torch, symbol. This section presents the current identity and future-facing organisation.
Founded on June 19 by Balasaheb Thackeray. The party emerges as a champion for the Bhumiputras in Mumbai.
